El Rugby en Baleares nació oficialmente en Ibiza, donde surgió el que hasta la fecha se pude considerar el club más antiguo del archipiélago balear: el Eivissa Rugby Club.
A pesar de esta oficialidad, el Rugby ya llevaba tiempo deambulando por algún que otro solar o campo de fútbol adaptado para la ocasión en Mallorca a principios de los 70, siempre en amistosos con combinados o equipos extranjeros afincados en la isla, incorporándose paulatinamente una legión de jugadores nativos.
De esta forma el Rugby Balear fue creciendo paulatinamente, aunque el relevo generacional apenas existía. En el año 1987 el rugby isleño dio un importante salto cualitativo con la aparición al unísono de varios clubes.
En 1989 se formó por primera vez la selección balear senior, disputando un encuentro de cariz internacional el 28 de Mayo de 1989, en el estadio de fútbol de "Na Capellera" en Manacor, ante la selección de Lieja.
Tras un período de estancamiento, se ha relanzado el panorama rugbístico en nuestras islas en estos últimos años.
